I left my heart in Milford Sound, and here’s why...

Milford Sound is without a doubt my all time favourite travel destination! It completely blew my mind with how natural and raw the place is, so untouched and full of nature with so many hidden depths. To even get to the fjord is a trek itself, a 2 hour one way journey through, under and around the mountains, but it is 100% completely worth it.

It says something when you arrive anywhere and are speechless at what you see, and thats exactly what happened here. Parking up and stepping out of the car you are greeted with a bird song. A very loud bird song, as don't forget we are in their territory after all, but it was as if someone was playing a soundtrack to our walk down to the barge to get aboard our boat trip.

The boat trip takes you up and back down the fjord where you will see seals and at certain times of the year dolphins and whales, waterfalls, how many depend on the weather from the previous few days, and mountains so high you will have to stretch your neck right back just to try and see the top of them.

To make the most of your visit i've listed a few thoughts below to help...

WHEN TO GO?

Most people would say summer, when its dry, but I say the complete opposite. The fjord has only 3 permanent waterfalls running down the mountainside and when we went there were 11. Why, because we chose to visit whilst it was raining, albeit a light shower, but it had been bucketing it down the previous few days, and as we all know rain, equals waterfalls.

HOW TO GET THERE?

You can fly there, many tour operators offer you the chance to fly over the mountains down to the fjord but part of its beauty is all of the little hidden spots along the drive through the mountains to get there. Imagine driving along, pulling over to the side of the road and finding a hidden waterfall and mirror lakes to immerse yourself in, the drive makes the experience all that much better in my opinion. And if we can cart along a camper van through the mountains, anyone can do it!

WHAT TO TAKE?

As little as possible. We shared a rucksack which carried our water bottles, food items, camera equipment and waterproofs and that was it. The boat trip is about 3 hours long in total, and when you get out of the fjord and touch on the open waters you can feel the temperature drop, and the wind rise up, so make sure you wear appropriate clothing.

Leave only footprints behind and take lifetime memories away with you.
